CHURCH HILL — Volunteer High School's choir groups hope to end the school year on a high note Tuesday as 14 seniors on the stage will be saying goodbye to their high school performing days "For good."
Tuesday at 7 p.m. four VHS choirs will be performing a Classic Pops Concert featuring music by James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkle, Dolly Parton, The Beatles and others.
Choir director Josh Wenger noted that Tuesday's concert will end with a special song for the graduating Class of 2019.
"We have 14 seniors and we'll be recognizing them before our last song, ’For Good,’ which is actually from the musical ‘Wicked,’ " Wenger said. "It's the song we will also be singing at graduation, so we will close with that song."
A special feature in this concert is a song called Snowy Evening. The music for this song was composed by junior Jarran Armstrong from the Robert Frost poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.
Wenger described Tuesday's show as a Classic Pops Concert.
He and director/pianist Carrie Carpenter had their singers rehearing golden oldies Tuesday such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkle; "Jolene" by Dolly Parton; "Daydream Believer" by the Monkees; and "Africa" by Toto.
Video clips from that rehearsal can be seen in the online version of this article at www.timesnews.net
Four groups are performing Tuesday including the Beginning Choir, Concert Choir, which is a mixed advance group, the Women's Choir, and Volunteer's "a cappella" group called Vol Cappella.
"Our spring concerts always tend to be a little bit lighter," Wenger said. "Last year we did a Disney/Broadway theme show. the year before that we did folk songs and spirituals. Everyone is ready for the end of the year so we try to do something that's a little more relaxed that what we do during the year as far as classical choral lit. We wanted to specifically promote this one because of how much the community may enjoy the music we're programming for this specific concert."
The concert is free and the public is encouraged to attend. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Theater across from the gym.
