CHURCH HILL — Hawkins County Schools is hoping to get a head start on filling soon-to-be-vacated job positions with a job fair scheduled for Thursday afternoon 4-6:30 p.m. at Church Hill Intermediate School.

HCS Human Resources Director Teresa Drinnon told the Times News on Monday she's anticipating at least 12 teacher job openings as of the end of the school year, although that number usually increases as summer break approaches.

Schools are also always looking for employees in a variety of other positions such as substitute teachers, instructional assistants, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and maintenance staff, and the school system is anticipating the creation of one new technology position.

"We have some folks who are retiring at the end of the year, so we are looking at filling those positions, but they're not posted yet," Drinnon said. "We have some folks who are retiring, some who are resigning and some moving out of the area."

Drinnon added, "We had around 12 teaching openings just from retirements and resignations, but we're constantly looking for substitutes, bus drivers and substitute drivers. We like to have a pool of good applicants so that when new positions open up we have some interested candidates already to contact. This is a great way for prospective employees to meet us face to face and have an introductory meeting with the principals and the supervisors."

Free in-house training is provided for all substitute teachers.

Instructional assistants are required to pass a para-professional test that can be completed at the Central Office, or they can skip the test if they have completed at least two years of college.

Bus drivers are required to earn a commercial drivers license, as well as other training, all of which can be acquired in-house at the Bus Shop training center.

Successful job candidates must also pass a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation criminal background check.

“Last year we actually hired 17 folks in some capacity from the job fair, so that was a really good resource last year," Drinnon said. "By being proactive and doing the job fair, at least we have a nice pool of folks we can reach out to, and we know that they are interested in these positions that may become available."

Church Hill Intermediate is located at 301 Park Ave. and shares a campus with Church Hill Middle School.

Job applications can also be completed online at www.hck12.net.
