Wise Career Technical Center gets SRO

Staff report • Jun 21, 2018 at 9:30 PM

WISE — Wise County Public Schools' Career Technical Center (CTC) will get a school resource officer courtesy of state grant approvals that include provision of the newest SRO position for the school division.

On Thursday Wise County Sheriff Ronnie Oakes announced three state grants to fund two existing SRO positions and the additional CTC post. Oakes said the county Board of Supervisors has agreed to provide the required matching funds for those positions.

Two of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) grants will continue to fund SRO's for J.W. Adams Combined School in Pound and Union Middle School in Big Stone Gap, Oakes said, as they are continuation grants awarded for the fourth consecutive year.

The new SRO position at the Career Technical Center will also serve the school division's Regional Learning Academy and Alternative Education Center that also operate in the Lake Street facility.

"The safety and security of our children, schools and school staff is one of the top priorities for me as sheriff," Oakes said. "I will continue to seek grants and other funding sources in hopes of placing a deputy in each Wise County public school."

SRO's are also in place at Union, Eastside and Central High Schools and L.F. Addington Middle School in Wise.
