Robotics competition at Holston Middle today

BLOUNTVILLE — Innovation Academy of Northeast Tennessee and Holston MIddle School will host a robotics competition among about 10 teams made up of students from each school this afternoon.

The VEX robotics competition will be at Holston Middle, near Tri-Cities Regional Airport, and IA, located within Holston, in the gym.

IA teacher Sandy Clark, sponsor of the robotics teams, said the event will start at 12:30 p.m. and involve robots pushing and knocking balls to areas for points. Teams of two to four students, in grades 6-8 at the two schools, will compete with one student at the controls at a time.

The arena is a 12-by-12 foot field where students score points for placing balls in specific sections.The forecourt gives no points. The middle zone scores 1 point for all balls. The goal zone scores 2 points for the small balls and 5 points for the large balls. Teams may move opponents balls and remove those points. The individual matches will have two teams battling to score the most points in two minutes and 30 seconds.

The event is open to the public. Students will set up form 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to noon.
