Are you looking for resources to jump-start your health and wellness goals? Food City is here to help. This month, Food City launched a new program for customers focused solely on health and wellness: The Food City Wellness Club. This loyalty program provides coupons, pharmacy promotions, healthy recipes and expert wellness advice from the Food City registered dietitian, and it is absolutely free!

This program is a partnership between Food City pharmacists and Food City’s Healthy Initiatives team to provide you with tips and resources for healthy living. When you join the club, you not only get 1,000 bonus ValuPoints with 12 qualifying prescriptions, 10 percent off diabetic supplies, and discounted smoking cessation products, but you will also enjoy free FlavoRx and prenatal vitamins. In addition to these pharmacy perks, each month will focus on different health topics and nutrition information from the Food City registered dietitian including recipes, exclusive coupons and offers, member-only events and so much more.

With the start of spring, this month it is all about making a fresh start and including more fruits and vegetables into your lifestyle. Very few Americans — in fact less than 20 percent of them — consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. However, one plant food is actually topping the charts for consumption as more and more people enjoy it in new ways: Avocado!

Avocados are actually a fruit. They are in the berry family, but we eat them more like a vegetable in savory dishes. They contain heart-healthy fats, folate and potassium along with many other vitamins and minerals. If fact, just topping your burger with avocado or guacamole makes your meal a little better for you.  According to a study, individuals who ate a burger topped with avocado had decreased vasoconstriction in their blood vessels than individuals who ate the burger alone without avocado. Check out these highlighted avocado recipes on foodcity.com: Baked Avocados and Zesty Shrimp and Avocado Salad.
