The cost is $10 per animal.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals, most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal” that occurs “in wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes. Domestic animals account for less than 10 percent of the reported cases, with cats, cattle, and dogs most often reported rabid.”
“In 2016, Tennessee reported 49 animals positive for rabies,” said Jerry Taylor, environmental health specialist with the Tennessee Department of Health. “Of those 49 animals, there were five dogs, three raccoons, nine bats and 29 skunks, one cat, one fox, and one horse. Sullivan County reported one skunk, one bat and one fox out of those 49 positive animals. Neighboring Johnson County had two skunks and one cat, and Washington County reported one dog and Greene County reported 15 skunks during the 2016 year. Since January of 2017, there have been 27 positive cases of rabies statewide. Of those 27 cases, Sullivan County has not reported any positives. Neighboring Johnson County has reported two raccoons and one skunk, and Greene County has reported four skunks and one bat positive.”
Taylor said it is essential to have all of your pets, outdoor and indoor, vaccinated against rabies.
Tennessee state law requires that all dogs and cats 3 months of age or older receive and maintain current rabies vaccinations.
Rabies vaccinations will be offered at a reduced rate of $10 per vaccination at the clinics on Sept. 28 beginning at 6 p.m. and “until the last customer is served.”
