KINGSPORT — The Weigel’s convenience store chain hopes to build eight to 10 new locations in the Tri-Cities, with one being in the Allandale community, Weigel’s Chairman and CEO Bill Weigel said Tuesday.

The stores will be a “Gen 3” version expected to include kiosks that allow customers to order from touch screen computers.

“We want to be in all three towns,” Weigel said in a phone interview. “We’re working with all three towns … we hope sometime next year to get started in Kingsport. … We’ll be looking at several locations in Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol. We’re looking forward to it. … We think it will be a good market for us. … The folks have been very nice to us.”

The Powell, Tenn.-based business, established in 1931, has more than 80 locations across East Tennessee.

When asked what is unique about the business, Weigel responded: “We hope it’s the people who run our stores. That’s our strong point. We’re a dairy and bakery. We have some products that are unique to our industry. … But the people who operate our stores are our biggest asset.”
