CHURCH HILL — A fast start and quick finish summed up Science Hill’s win over Volunteer on Tuesday night.

That also described the Lady Hilltoppers’ perfect march through the Big 7 Conference this basketball season.

Science Hill capped an undefeated league mark with a 61-35 win, one in which coach Scottie Whaley said he saw enough good things to keep things moving in a positive direction for next week’s District 1-AAA tournament.

“Overall I was pretty pleased with our performance,” Whaley said. “We have to get better defensively for sure, tighten some things up. But we will be ready to go next week.”

The Lady ’Toppers (21-7, 12-0) wrap up their regular season with a road trip to Campbell County on Friday. Volunteer (14-13, 4-7) closes its slate Thursday at Cherokee.

THE CLUB

Science Hill’s Erin Egerbrecht joined exclusive company when she went over the 1,000-point mark for her career. She did it in style with 21 points, knocking down four 3-pointers.

“I knew I was close, I just didn’t know how close,” Egerbrecht said. “I’m just glad for it to be over with. We can focus on winning and doing what we want to do and going where we want to go.

“This has always been a goal, but honestly it’s lower on the goals. I’d rather get the wins and do what we do together. I love this team and they really support me, and I’m just really happy.”

OUT OF THE GATES

Science Hill slapped Volunteer with a 10-0 run to start the game, but the Lady Falcons battled the Lady ’Toppers on even terms from there to the end of third quarter. Science Hill led 39-27 entering the fourth.

Things then swayed back toward Lady ’Toppers in the quarter when they racked up 22 points.

THE LEADERS

Science Hill’s Alasia Smith did her usual good work throughout the game. She was especially important in the third when scored all seven of her team’s points. She finished with a game-high 16.

Kenady Knittel knocked down a pair of treys and finished with 10 points for Volunteer.
