Baker-led Rye Cove boys turn back Jenkins on the road

JENKINS, Ky. — The Rye Cove boys basketball team came out on top in a seesaw interstate battle with Jenkins on Monday.

After falling behind 17-12 after one quarter before pulling within two points, 27-25, at halftime, the Eagles blitzed the Kentucky team 19-8 in the third and held on for a 58-54 victory.

Zach Baker scored 18 points and Matthew Rhoton and Andrew Jessee each finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for Rye Cove (10-10).

UNICOI COUNTY 79, JOHNSON COUNTY 69

MOUNTAIN CITY — Brock Thompson canned seven of the Blue Devils’ 10 3-point shots and finished with 28 points in the Three Rivers Conference win.

Lucas Slagle threw in 15 points for the Blue Devils.

Michael Oxentine finished with 19 points to lead the Longhorns. Lucas Phillips had 16 and Clayton Cross netting 13.

HAMPTON 72, CHUCKEY-DOAK 52

AFTON — Caleb Oaks scored 18 points, Jordan Bentley netted 17 and Rocky Croy threw in 10 in the Bulldogs’ road win.

Hampton blazed in 43 points in the second half.

Alex Maupin scored a game-high 20 points for the Black Knights and Corwin Ramsey had 15.

GIRLS

THOMAS WALKER 52, HANCOCK COUNTY 26

SNEEDVILLE — Shelbie Fannon led the Lady Pioneers’ balanced offense with 13 points.

Lakin Burke, Abby Bullins and Talyn Dibrell each had nine for Thomas Walker (18-2).

Payton Neeley had 10 points to lead the Lady Indians.

PATRICK HENRY 61, RYE COVE 28

CLINCHPORT — Breanna Yarber put a double-double on the board with 26 points and 11 rebounds in powering the Lady Rebels to the nondistrict win.

Patrick Henry held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the second quarter and jetted out to a 37-6 lead at the break.

Sarah Cupova led Rye Cove (8-12) with nine points and 10 rebounds. Trista Snow contributed eight points and nine boards.

JOHNSON COUNTY 52, UNICOI COUNTY 48, OT

MOUNTAIN CITY — The Lady Longhorns gutted out the overtime Three Rivers win despite not having a player score in double figures.

Taylor Cox and Emmy Miller had nine points apiece to lead Johnson County.

Tenley Holt totaled 13, Caroline Podvin had 12 and Ashton Vance contributed 10 for the Lady Blue Devils, who were outscored 5-1 in the extra period.

HAMPTON 59, CHUCKEY-DOAK 45, OT

AFTON — The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Knights 16-2 in overtime.

Destini Milhorn hit three 3-pointers for Hampton, including a key make in overtime. The Lady Bulldogs shot 18-for-32 from the free-throw line overall but were 11-for-14 in the extra period.

Earendo Davis had a game-high 19 points for Chuckey-Doak. Sierra Jaynes had 12.
