The Trailblazers opened the game on a 10-1 run, forcing Pioneers coach Cody Connell to call a timeout.
“We were down nine and the guys were acting like we were 30 points behind,” Connell said. “I told them there was a lot of basketball left in the game.”
Crockett got the message loud and clear.
Trailing 14-6 at the start of the second period, the Pioneers used a 13-2 run to move on top 19-16. At the halftime break, Crockett led 24-23.
An 11-2 run to open the second half put the Pioneers up 35-25, and they kept building their advantage from there.
“We started shooting the ball better after the first quarter,” Connell noted. “But I thought a real key was how much better we rebounded in the second half.”
Turnovers proved to be the culprit for the Trailblazers (13-10, 6-6), whose sloppy ball-handling resulted in too many transition baskets for Crockett (17-9, 7-4).
“I think we had 12 turnovers in the first half and about that many in the second,” said Boone coach Chris Brown. “We had an opportunity early in the game to get some separation but couldn’t because we got so careless with the ball.
“Once Crockett gets going downhill, they are hard to stop."
Dawson Wagner led the Pioneers with 19 points. Mack Hensley added 17 and Donta Hackler had 14.
Colby Backus had 13 points and Chase McGonigle 11 for Boone. Jared Adkins pulled down 10 rebounds for the ’Blazers.
BOONE GIRLS PULL AWAY
The Lady Trailblazers (15-9, 9-3) broke open a close game early in the third quarter. Leading 23-17 at the half, Boone pushed its advantage to 33-20 with 3:17 to go in the period and never looked back in a 53-35 victory.
While the Lady Pioneers (13-14, 4-7) held Jaycie Jenkins, Boone’s leading scorer, to just seven points, they could not contain the Lady Trailblazers’ Kayla Gibson (12), Madi Runnels (11) and Greyson Stevens (10), who combined for 33 points.
“Jaycie had an off night but the other girls stepped up,” said Boone coach Beau Hauldren. “We made some adjustments at halftime and just kept forcing the ball inside. The girls showed patience with that and it worked out well.”
Alyssa Suits had 10 points to lead Crockett.
