The Trailblazers made six consecutive shots in a span of about three minutes, spurring a 13-2 run that put them up 49-38. Coach Chris Brown’s squad almost couldn’t miss in the second half when the Blazers shot 64.7% (22-for-34).
Chase McGonigle hit five consecutive 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 24 points for Boone, which sits alone in third place in the Big 7 behind Dobyns-Bennett and Science Hill.
Colby Backus had a game-high 25 points, Jared Adkins contributed 17 and Cade Norris netted 16.
Mchale Bright scored 20 points for Tennessee High. Blake Fauver had 12 and Nolan Wishon 11.
SULLIVAN CENTRAL 80, JOHNSON COUNTY 68 (See Cheryl Gray’s 📸📸)
MOUNTAIN CITY — The Cougars rallied from a 16-point, second- quarter deficit for a 28-point turnaround.
Sullivan Central had six players in double figures led by Joltin Harrison’s 16 points — a dozen from 3-point range. Ethan Lane tallied 14 points, and Bryson Crabtree and Jacob Fields each scored 12. Ty Barb and Preston Sams each scored 11.
Lucas Phillips hit four 3-pointers and had 24 points for Johnson County. Michael Oxentine and Clayton Cross each scored 13.
CASTLEWOOD 70, THOMAS WALKER 59
CASTLEWOOD — Zach Owens’ double-double of 15 points and 10 assists was the catalyst in the Blue Devils’ Cumberland District win over the visiting Pioneers.
Jacob Vance and Dalton Fields also double-doubled for Castlewood (6-10, 2-4), both with 13 points and 10 boards. Dylan Mullins also finished with a 13-point night.
Caleb Yeary put forth a valiant effort for the Pioneers (0-16, 0-6), scoring 27 points.
GATE CITY 79, JOHN BATTLE 44
BRISTOL, Va. — The Blue Devils took care of Mountain 7 District business on the road.
Bradley Dean fired up 28 points, Andrew Hensley powered in 20 and Jon Compton contributed 10 for Gate City (12-4, 8-0).
The Trojans (4-14, 0-8) trailed by only six, 32-26, at halftime before the Blue Devils’ offense kicked into a higher gear. Reed Samuel scored half his team’s points, 22.
UNION 61, ABINGDON 54
ABINGDON — The Bears went on the road and returned home with a big Mountain 7 win over the Falcons (9-7, 5-3).
Sean Cusano fired up 21 points to pace the winning effort for Union (11-6, 4-4). Alex Rasnick contributed 15 points and Noah Jordan 12 for the Bears.
DANIEL BOONE 49, TENNESSEE HIGH 39
GRAY — The Lady Trailblazers held a commanding 19-point lead approaching the end of the third quarter, but Tennessee High didn’t go down without a fight.
The Lady Vikings pulled within five points, 42-37, with 1:29 left in the game and had outscored Boone 12-0 over a five-minute span.
However, Boone managed to escape despite missing 10 free throws in the fourth quarter and 14 in the second half.
Jaycie Jenkins had another big night for the Lady ’Blazers, netting 30 points.
Kenzie Nickles led the Lady Vikings with 14 points and Madison Blair threw in 11.
SULLIVAN CENTRAL 57, JOHNSON COUNTY 45 (See Cheryl Gray’s 📸📸)
MOUNTAIN CITY — Abbey Crawford dominated inside, scoring 22 points to lead the Class AA No. 6- ranked Lady Cougars to the hard-fought win over the Lady Longhorns.
Macy McClellan added 15 points in the Central victory.
Taylor Parsons led Johnson County’s efforts with 13 points. Sadie Stout scored 12 and Taylor Cox netted nine. The Lady Longhorns shot 0-for-13 from 3-point range.
GATE CITY 57, JOHN BATTLE 23
BRISTOL, Va. — Behind a 20-point effort from newly minted 1,000-point scorer Sarah Thompson, the Lady Blue Devils manhandled the host Lady Trojans.
Gate City (9-8, 5-3) led 18-7 after one quarter, 30-13 at halftime and 51-21 after three quarters of the Mountain 7 game.
Kayli Dunn chipped in eight points and Braylin Steele and Macey Mullins finished with six apiece in the balanced victory.
Anna McKee led John Battle (5-3, 1-7) with nine points.
ABINGDON 61, UNION 42
ABINGDON — The Lady Bears stayed within striking distance in the first half before the Lady Falcons pulled away for the Mountain 7 victory.
Union (12-5, 4-4) trailed by just three points, 15-12, after one quarter and and nine at halftime, 29-20. District-leading Abingdon (17-1, 8-0) outscored the visitors 29-20 in the second half to secure the win.
EASTSIDE 84, TWIN SPRINGS 39
COEBURN — Anna Whited recorded a double-double of 19 points and 11 steals, Chloe Powers dropped in 20 points and the Lady Spartans (13-3, 6-0) powered to a Cumberland District win at home.
Kaylee Yates also notched a double-double for Eastside — totaling 12 points and 10 rebounds — and Carrie Boyd aided the winning cause with 10 points.
Emaleigh Powers was the top scorer for Twin Springs (7-10, 3-3) with 19 points, and Chloe Gilmer finished with 12.
THOMAS WALKER 53, CASTLEWOOD 12
CASTLEWOOD — Lakin Burke scored 12 points in the Lady Pioneers’ Cumberland rout of the host Lady Blue Devils (0-14, 0-6).
Shelbie Fannon contributed 10 points for Thomas Walker (14-2, 5-1).
