GATE CITY — One night removed from surpassing 1,000 points in his career, Gate City’s Bradley Dean had a stellar night for the Blue Devils.

Dean scored a game-high 30 points on Saturday and Zac Ervin added 29 to lead Gate City to a 73-52 interstate basketball win over Daniel Boone inside the Devils’ Den.

Dean stepped up big in the second quarter for Gate City (14-2).

After the Blue Devils and Boone (8-10) battled through six lead changes and four ties in the first quarter, the Trailblazers built a 25-20 lead a minute into the second quarter.

The rest of the period belonged to the Blue Devils.

Led by Dean and Ervin, with some scoring help from David George, Gate City used a 14-2 run over the final 5:27 of the second quarter to build a 34-27 halftime advantage.

Gate City never trailed in the second half.

“They just do such a hard job attacking with Dean and Zac,” said Daniel Boone coach Chris Brown. “We’re throwing bodies at them and trying to help off of them, but just their strength and their ability is just fantastic and it creates some problems for us.”

Dean and Ervin combined to score 10 points during the run, including six from the free-throw line.

“We fouled them. It’s a tough matchup going in there to begin with and then you put them on the line. So we’re playing from behind at that point,” Brown said.

Gate City coach Scott Vermillion was pleased with his team’s aggressiveness around the basket.

“We got a couple of offensive rebounds (during the run) and we were able to get it in the basket,” Vermillion said.

“We didn’t shoot from the floor as good tonight, but we certainly did get to the basket.”

Gate City’s attack on the basket paid big dividends at the free-throw line.

The Blue Devils hit 21 of their 25 shots (84 percent) from the free-throw line.

Boone was perfect from the line but had only five attempts.

The Trailblazers did a lot of their damage from the outside, hitting seven 3-point shots.

Judah Hilton led the Trailblazers in scoring with 12 points and Chad Heglar added 11.

In the girls’ game, Daniel Boone (17-7) outscored the host Lady Blue Devils 25-13 in the second quarter to build a 40-20 halftime lead and cruised through the second half of a 68-43 win.

Jaycie Jenkins led the Lady ’Blazers with 23 points and Bayleigh Carmichel contributed 20. Madi Runnels chipped in with 10.

Gate City (11-5) got 15 points from Marah Mullins and 10 each from Jaden Fullen and Sarah Thompson.
