KINGSPORT — In the first baseball game of the summer for Kingsport’s Hammond Post 3 Patriots, everything clicked in a 10-4, five-inning win over Elizabethton Post 49 on Sunday afternoon at Hunter Wright Stadium.
The Patriots smashed out 12 hits — 11 of them singles — and Tevin Shelton went 4-for-5 with six RBIs in the American Legion matchup.
Colby Taylor also had four hits for the Patriots — three singles and a double — and drove in one run.
Brodie Frew pitched 3 2/3 innings — tallying a no-hitter through three frames — but issued two walks. Elizbethton got its first hit when Jack Ferris connected with a hanging curveball for a single over the shortstop’s head.
Drew Bentley and Taylor came out of the bullpen for the Patriots.
Elizabethton scored all its runs in the fourth inning and finished with three hits and three errors.
Hammond stole seven bases on the day, led by Devin Tignor’s two swipes.
The Patriots were guilty of just one error.
