Meredith pitches Bucs to win over Golden Raiders

JOHNSON CITY — University High pitcher Kaleb Meredith was efficient and effective against Sullivan North on Monday night.

The left-hander threw 68 pitches over seven innings, giving up four hits and striking out eight in the Bucs’ 5-1 win over the Golden Raiders in Watauga Valley Conference baseball action at Thomas Stadium.

The Bucs had eight hits of their own, coming up with the biggest ones with runners in scoring position.

Esau Byrd’s RBI single scored Carter Pollock in the second inning, but North tied the game in the top of the third when Zach Scott doubled and Tyler DePriest followed with a RBI single.

University High pulled back ahead on Briley Townsend’s RBI single in the fourth and added a run in the fifth off Michael Degennaro’s sacrifice fly that scored Meredith.

The final pair of runs came off Greer Barnett’s RBI single and Jacob Peeler racing home after a wild pitch. Byrd and Peeler each scored two runs for the Bucs.

Brayden Wilhoit suffered the loss for North despite giving up just two earned runs over six innings. Wilhoit also rapped out a double.

Sullivan East 8, Sullivan Central 0

BLUFF CITY — Patriots pitchers Brantley Ellis and Alex Hawk combined on a one-hit shutout in the win over the Cougars.

Ellis struck out 11 over six innings and Hawk came on in the final inning to strike out two more batters.

Perry Casaday was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Eli Milhorn went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Dylan White was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Hunter Mullins was 2-for-3 and scored twice and Dylan Bartley went 2-for-4.

Isaac Hood had the lone hit for Central.

Daniel Boone 5, Science Hill 0

GRAY — Left-hander Cade Elliott pitched six shutout innings and smacked a two-run double to lead the Trailblazers to the Big 7 Conference win over the visiting Hilltoppers (7-5, 4-1).

A 6-foot-5, 215-pound junior who is verbally committed to Tennessee, Elliott struck out six and allowed three hits to cruise to the win. Chase Chandler pitched the seventh.

Daniel Boone (10-5, 5-2) also got an RBI double from junior Colby Backus and an RBI single from Hunter Adams.

Elizabethton 7, Johnson County 0

MOUNTAIN CITY — Evan Carter tossed a four-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Cyclones Carter also had a two-run triple in the fifth and scored on Evan Perkins’ home run to left on the next at-bat.

Weston Throop went 3-for-3 and had a stolen base to lead Johnson County. Jayden Joiner suffered the loss.

Unicoi County 3, Happy Valley 0

ELIZABETHTON — Peyton Whitson struck out 13 and walked two in a one-hit shutout for the Blue Devils, also contributing a double at the plate.

Caleb Crain was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Ramon Avila was 2-for-2 with a run driven in. LJ Mitchell had the other RBI and Drew Keasling scored twice.

Michael Harrah was tagged with the loss.

Twin Springs 4, Castlewood 3

NICKELSVILLE — Corbin Kilgore went 2-for-3, drove in a run and scored one of his own in the Titans’ Cumberland District win over the Blue Devils.

Connor Gilmer, Mason Elliot and Tanner Dingus also scored for Twin Springs. Dingus was the winner after tossing 4 1/3 innings and fanning 10.

Castlewood’s Devin Robinson also struck out 10 over five innings but took the loss.

SOFTBALL

Sullivan South 20, Hampton 0

HAMPTON —Nicole Troutman was 3-for-3 with five RBIs to lead the Lady Rebels in a Game 1 romp over the Lady Bulldogs.

McKenzie Wallen went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs, and Mackie Compton was 3-for-5 with four runs scored. Winning pitcher Tara Shivley aided her cause with three RBIs and two runs.

Macy Ellis was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and Allison Chapman scored twice and had two RBIs.

In Game 2, Susie Chatman picked up her first varsity win and helped herself with three RBIs and two runs.

Lauren Richardson had two hits and scored two runs. Chloe Nelson and Emma Jones each finished with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Dobyns-Bennett 6, Sullivan East 4

KINGSPORT — Kassidy Miller hit a two-run, walk-off home run to give the Lady Indians the nonconference win.

Leadoff batter Griffin Mullins finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Peyton Domby was 2-for-3. Morgan Riffle was in the circle for Dobyns-Bennett.

Chelsea Sams went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Sullivan East. Kylee Wolfe and Katelyn Loudy also finished 2-for-4.

Elizabethton 8, Happy Valley 6

ELIZABETHTON — Trailing 6-5 in the top of the seventh, Madisun Pritchard hit a three-run home run to lift the Lady Cyclones to the win.

Maggie Johnson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Autumn Hensley was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Kaylen Shell went 2-for-4.

Olivia Absher went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and three runs scored for the Lady Warriors. Kadie Havner also homered, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Rye Cove 14, Hancock County 2

CLINCHPORT — Ashley Smith smacked a three-run homer and drove in five runs in a 3-for-3 effort for the Lady Eagles.

Abby Vicars tripled and scored three runs for Rye Cove.

Addi Fleenor doubled and had an RBI for the Lady Indians.

Twin Springs 4, Castlewood 3

NICKELSVILLE — The Lady Titans took a one-run lead after four innings and starting pitcher Aubrey Powers (3-3) made it stand up for the Cumberland win.

Powers struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. She aided her cause by belting a solo homer.

Bell McCoy finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Chenoa Dean was 1-for-2 for Twin Springs.

John Battle 13, Wise Central 2

BRISTOL, Va. — Haylee Dye smacked two home runs and Emma Harmon went 4-for-4 with a homer in the Lady Trojans’ Mountain 7 District win over the Lady Warriors.

Madison Hill piled up 17 strikeouts in two-hitting Wise Central, which got a home run from Reagan Dotson.

Jill Sturgill took the loss.

J.I. Burton 12, Thomas Walker 0

NORTON — MacKenzie Franklin doubled and tripled among her three hits and drove in four runs in the Lady Raiders’ Cumberland win at home.

Franklin also picked up the win after striking out seven and giving up just two hits.

Hannah McNew also contributed three hits for Burton.
