PIGEON FORGE — Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show, Dolly Parton’s newest attraction in the Smokies, is set for a “soft opening” May 24. And Parton is expected to officially open Pirates on Friday, June 7.
Renovation of the Pirates Voyage building (formerly Celebration! Dinner Show) began the first week in January. The first — and biggest — task was to “build” the lagoon, the centerpiece of the set that now houses the two 25-foot pirate ships (and a sunken 30-foot wreck) where the action of the entire show takes place. The digging of that foundation required removing more than 281 loads of dirt (7,500 tons) by dump truck over more than a month. The 15-foot lagoon now holds 300,000 gallons of water. Other work included installation and finishing of 600 cubic yards of concrete and 50,000 pounds of steel in the 30,000-square-foot arena, which seats nearly 700, and the creation of a 35,000-gallon animal habitat for the seals that appear in the show.
In the show, Crimson and Sapphire pirates battle on deck, in the water and in the sky above their full-sized pirate ships in the lagoon. Music is by Parton and Mark Brymer.
The cast of more than two dozen aerialists, divers, dancers and singers worked with experienced performers at the Myrtle Beach “Pirates” to complete rehearsals and intense training for the acrobatic and diving skills required of pirates and mermaids alike in this show.
The new four-course “Me Hearties Feast” menu includes: Buccaneer Biscuit; Voyager Creamy Vegetable Soup; Cracklin’ Pan-Fried Chicken; Bone-in Pork Chop; Matey’s Mac ‘n’ Cheese; Jolly Roger Sweet Potato Souffle; Walk-the-Plank Peach Turnover; and unlimited Coca-Cola, tea, or coffee. Vegetarian and gluten-free meals are available on request.
The $9 million worth of new construction, combined with the company’s initial investment in the property, totals $28 million.
Reservations are now being taken for all 2019 shows; ticket information is available online at piratesvoyage.com or by phone (865)-505-AHOY (2469).
