KINGSPORT — For those who think there isn’t much to do in the Model City for entertainment, the Kingsport Theatre Guild suggests you check out its new play, “I’ll Never Be Hungry Again,” which opens Friday as part of the KTG’s Downtown Series.

The play, a spoof of “Gone With the Wind,” is the work of local playwright Catherine Bush.

“I’ll Never Be Hungry Again” is directed by KTG’s youngest director ever, Denver Muncey, who is a senior at Sullivan East High School. Muncey has been accepted into the Savannah College of Art and Design with a scholarship.

Muncey said the show is unique in both its writing and staging, with the venue being the intimate Taylored Venue and Events downtown. This is his first opportunity to direct outside of school, where he has directed his peers in multiple productions, and has found the challenge of being in charge of an all-adult cast both difficult and rewarding.

Muncey said he has been constantly amazed at the talent of the cast and the willingness of both cast and crew to make this a collaborative production.

About the play

David is an African-American graduate student assigned to read “Gone With The Wind” for a Southern lit class. But David doesn’t want to read the novel and puts it off until the night before the test.

Then, under the influence of too much partying, David passes out in the middle of the story only to wake up and find himself at Terra Firma, the plantation home of Starlett O’Hara. It’s only a wild dream, or is it? David begins to wonder as he gets pulled into the plot of America’s most famous romance, slightly skewed and fraught with musical zaniness.

The cast

David — Darrius Akridge

Starlett O’Hara — Audrey Holley

Whet Butler — Kerry Morton

Ghastly Wilkes — Tim Story

Smelanie Hamilton — Mekia Hickman
