Kingsport Art Guild invites new members to share talents

Established in 1949, the Kingsport Art Guild (K.A.G.) has a long and proud history of perpetuating the visional arts over almost three quarters of a century - beginning with monthly meetings of women in Kingsport and outlying areas, to women who had studied art and the visual arts in school and studios, some even taking classes abroad and in informal studies after they married and started families.

Over the years, the Art Guild has grown to include different types of art instruction, education and theory in many types of art, from classical to modern and from lecture halls to exhibits.

“Our vision is to be a driving force for visual arts excellence in the Greater Kingsport area,” said K.A.G. vice president Donna Bird.

The club continues to grow and learn in the visual arts, and invites community members to join them!

The Kingsport Art Guild gallery, office and studio are located near downtown at 1200 East Center Street in Kingsport. The gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, and on Sunday during special events.

The art guild hosts various activities throughout the year, including:

Exhibits. The Main Gallery , located on the second floor of the Renaissance Arts Center and Theatre building, is an inviting space where members have 12 diverse exhibits each year.

Art Competitions. Three of the shows hosted each year are juried for cash awards (Appalachian Art Show, Fun Fest Show and Members’ Show). The Appalachian Art Show is juried for entry and cash awards.

Classes. Various art classes are offered seasonally and ongoing workshops are offered by local and nationally recognized artists.

Weekly “Paint-In Sessions,” which are held on Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Room 313, and are free and open to the public.

Monthly Meetings, which are held for members and for people interested in joining. The meetings are fun and feature a variety of presentations during this time together.

The next Kingsport Art Guild meeting will feature local potter Kipp Brixey. The owner of Brixey Studios, Kipp will be the featured speaker for the first meeting of the new art guild year in September. In this interactive meeting, Kipp will do a live demonstration on his potter’s wheel. Attendees will have the opportunity to hand build something through his instruction. The meeting will be held in room 239 of the Renaissance Center from 5 to 7 p.m., Sept. 4. For more information, visit www.kingsportartguild.com or call (423) 246-1227.

K.A.G.’s membership year runs from July through June.
