School board member calls Volunteer football field 'rough' and 'unsafe'

Although the cost of sports field upkeep is usually left to the individual school, one Hawkins County school board member said Thursday the condition of Volunteer High School's football field is bad enough to make an exception.

On Tuesday the Rogersville Board of Mayor and Aldermen was asked to add a voluntary donation option on city water bills to generate funds for artificial turf at both county high school football fields. The cost is estimated between $1.25 and $1.5 million for both schools combined. To help raise funds a voluntary contribution option would be placed on Rogersville water bills which would allow customers to contributed $1, $3 or $5 per month toward an “athletic activity fund”.

Volunteer hosts first Special Olympics since being named a Unified Champion School

Earlier this year, the Tennessee Department of Education designated Volunteer a Unified Champion School in recognition of its Unified Special Olympics program. The program pairs special needs students with other student peers who compete together in special track and field events.

Jadyn Lawrence is a Level 9 competitive gymnast at Meadowview Gymnastics in Kingsport. She has competed gymnastics for the past 11 years and, this past weekend, she and her Level 9 Senior Gymnastics teammates McKylee Booher and Lauren Killen (who placed as first alternate) competed in at the USAG Region 8 Regional Gymnastics competition in Cartersville, Georgia, for a chance to compete at the USAG Level 9 Nationals in Kissimmee Florida next month. Jadyn Lawrence (center) is one of nine Level 9 gymnasts from Tennessee and the only Level 9 gymnast from the Tri- Cities to earn the opportunity to compete in the Level 9 national competition this year. This is a huge honor and accomplishment.
