Visit Kingsport ruffled some New York feathers last month by announcing Kingsport was ‘reclaiming’ its right to the title ‘Birthplace of the Long Island Iced Tea.’ A crew from here will travel to Long Island, N.Y. in a couple of weeks, and the team from up yonder will travel to Kingsport during Fun Fest.
You’ve insulted our honor and we demand satisfaction. That pretty much sums up the response from barkeeps and bartenders along Long Island’s (New York) famed Nautical Mile to Kingsport’s recent “reclaiming” of the title “birthplace of the Long Island Iced Tea.”
The disco-era version of the drink, famed for including all clear liquors and a splash of cola, dates to the 1970s and New York. But a version created locally in the 1920s including whiskey — and maple syrup — is being celebrated as “the original” by Visit Kingsport.
