Paramedic begins trek from Kingsport to Knoxville for 8-year-old

James Hubbard of Scott County left the Model City on Wednesday, running 104.8 miles to Knoxville. Hubbard is doing so to raise awareness for Lilyan - an eight year old girl from Indiana who suffers from Spastic Cerebral Palsy.

Concerns about Cleek Farm property put proposed Greenbelt extension on hold

Miscommunication over the exact route of the Kingsport Greenbelt across the Cleek Farm property resulted in nearly 100 people attending a public hearing on the matter last week. As of now, the proposal to extend the greenbelt from Cleek Road to Orebank Road is on hold.

Greenbelt extension back on track

Duco Construction, the company performing the work, finished up with the boardwalk extension on the Sullivan County side and a portion of it on the Hawkins County side, in the fall of 2015. What remains is extending the greenbelt up the hill near Big Elm Road and down Netherland Inn Road to Rotherwood Drive.

A safer stroll: Kingsport repaves one mile of Greenbelt

Over 690 tons of asphalt were laid along portions of the trail, greatly increasing not only the quality of the path in certain spots, but also the safety of the entire trail. A smooth surface greatly decreases the chances for a bicycle accident or a runner or child to trip and fall.

According to Kitty Frazier, parks and recreation manager, the weather-resistance machine has adjustable resistance levels and will basically do the same exercise movements as a similar piece of equipment in a regular indoor gym setting.

Another parcel acquired to fill in Kingsport Greenbelt

City officials say the purchase of the property will allow for future expansion of the greenbelt, tying in with the existing walking and biking trail on the Wayne Michelli property to the city-owned property on Keller Street.

A wooden boardwalk has been built on the Kingsport side of the Holston River, from the confluence, up the hill and to the Rotherwood Bridge. A similar boardwalk will be built on the Hawkins County side next year.

The trail is comprised of four sections - Boatyard District, Woodlawn, Cherokee Grounds and Buffalo Grasslands.
