Ginger Carrick Curlee was just shy of her 40th birthday in 2008 when the stay-at-home mom was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. At the time, her two sons were just 7 and 2.

Seven churches of different denominations banded together and started meeting monthly and, from that, grew H.O.P.E. with services including a food pantry, clothes closet, elderly/homebound meal delivery, counseling and tutoring.

The medal will be based on the Civil War veteran's medal. The back of the medal reads "150th Anniversary, Battle of Kingsport, Dec. 13, 1864-2014." For the design on the front of the medal, we are seeking submissions from area students.
