NIE Coordinator

My name is Elaine Riner and  I am the Kingsport Times News' Newspaper In Education Coordinator.

My main job is to work with sponsors and teachers to aid in getting newspapers to the classroom so students can use them to learn.  I hold a workshop each summer for teachers interested in sponsorship, and those who attend are eligible to get 30 newspapers a week, whether it is online or in-print.

Sponsors are a big part of our program and they mean a lot to us.  Without them, NIE would be impossible.  As NIE Coordinator, I work with our sponsors through the year as they so generously give to our educational cause.

Other parts of my job include:  newspaper tours, classroom visits, career fairs, the weekly writing column "Write On," website maintanence, contests and deadlines, and special thank you advertisements.  This job keeps me busy, but is certainly very rewarding.

My favorite part of being the Newspaper in Education Coordinator is getting to spend time with students.  Going to different classrooms and meeting with kids is very fun and the reason why I am here.  It is all about opening up to them, allowing them to see how fun the newspaper can be, and how much it is a part of our lives.  Students make it all worthwhile!

This Week's Write-On:

There must be something you want to learn more about. A country, an animal, a food? Find one thing you want to learn about, research it, and give three facts about what you find.

I'm afraid to _____________ because.....

I am afraid to do drugs because they are SUPER scary.  I think they are pointless, stupid, and won't get me anywhere in life besides the hospital.  So many kids now are turning to drugs for stress relievers or to get this funny feeling that supposedly makes you feel good.  I just want the kids to know that there are so many better ways to relieve stress.  I've had a pretty rough life and I'm clean.  I box and play all kinds of sports to relieve my stress, and I also sing and dance.  Kids just need to know that drugs aren't the way.
