The Mary Hughes Middle School girls and boys track teams captured the TMSAA State Track and Field Championship Runner-Up Award on Saturday, May 19 at Austin Peay University. The Lions scored 49 points and missed out on the overall championship by just one point to Bellvue from Memphis' 50 points. The Lady Lions surprised the entire field by finishing as runner-ups to state power Bellvue. Mary Hughes is coached by Jon White and Darrell Bryant. To completely grasp the magnitude of the Mary Hughes accomplishments, it's important to note that the team has no home track to practice on and consists of only five girls and eight boys. The school, with an enrollment of just 154 middle school students, competes against teams with an enrollment of 500 or more.
