Weber City church seeking more children for part-time preschool program

WEBER CITY – A longstanding tradition is in danger of coming to an end at Holston View United Methodist Church in Weber City.

For over 40 years, the church has offered preschool and daycare programs for the surrounding community. Now, the part-time preschool program faces cancellation if more families don’t sign up by the beginning of next week.

“It’s the perfect program for families that might have a stay-at-home mom, or the kids that are staying with a grandparent,” said Savanna Huffman, program coordinator. “So they don’t have to pay for that full-time childcare because it’s so expensive.”

Robin Huffman, program director, said the part-time program has traditionally been offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in two sessions: one from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and one from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Attendance in that program has fallen off recently as more local schools launch preschool programs of their own, Robin Huffman said.

“Our part-time program has went down a little bit since the pre-k has come into the school system,” she said, “and we want to be able to save that and not do away with it because it’s been here so many years.”

She added that the church also offers an all-day preschool held each weekday, a daycare program for young children and an after-school program. These programs aren’t in danger of being cancelled, though spots are still available.

Sixteen children are currently signed up for the part-time preschool, but that isn’t enough for the program to operate, Robin Huffman said. The church would like to have at least 10 to 15 more children sign up by the beginning of next week.

“Basically we’re going to give it one more week,” Robin Huffman said, “because we’ll have to let parents know if we don’t have enough, that basically they would have to go a different route.”

The program is open to children in both Virginia and Tennessee, and the cost is $130 per month. It’s taught by Jan Taylor and Freda Tate, each of whom have 30 years of experience teaching the program.

Robin and Savanna Huffman added that the program has not only been successful at preparing children for kindergarten, but also at preparing them spiritually.

“We have the privilege of being able to be Christ-centered,” Savanna Huffman said, “so the kids leave not only academically ready and socially ready, but spiritually ready, as well.”

To sign your child up for the program, call the church at (276) 386-3149 or visit in person at 174 Church St. in Weber City. A $20 registration fee is required at sign-up, and payment is due at the beginning of each month.
