KINGSPORT - They didn't have to be seaworthy. Just pool-worthy.
Amateur boat builders convened at the Kingsport Aquatic Center Saturday morning for the FunFest "Crazy Cardboard Boat Race."
Although speed was crucial, the key to winning over the crowd was creative design.
Among the favorites was a Viking ship captained by a horn helmet wearing, hammer toting Thor impersonator with blond pigtails.
Another favorite was the green dragon "Leviathan" which finished third in the overall competition, but tipped over in the "How many people can you fit in the boat" finale race.
The big winner of the race was the traditional canoe-style "Anchors Aweigh" which edged out "Kelly's Cutter" in a photo finish during the championship race.
