Yuma Elementary students are given a chance to earn Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold Plus awards during the year by taking part in Project Fit America events.
The sport hoop event involves using a 3-pound hula hoop and gives awards for Bronze for a time of 90 seconds, Silver for a time three minutes, Gold for six minutes and Gold Plus award for a 10 minutes or more.
On Wednesday Will Lane went 2 hours, 40 minutes, Ashtyn Gibson finished with a time of 7 hours, and Brittany Perry continued for another 24 minutes for at time of 7 hours, 24 minutes.
Yuma Elementary is one of several Project Fit America schools in this area, sponsored by Wellmont Foundation of Kingsport. PFA is celebrating 24 years of giving grants to schools across America. From 1990-2014 they have donated to over 870 schools in 300 cities and 42 states.
Elizabeth Morelock of Roosevelt Elementary holds second place in the Place Kong-Elite National Record with a time of 8 hours, 8 minutes set in May 2012. The record for a 3-pound weighted sport hoop is held by Megan Bozzer, a sixth-grader from Homer-Center Elementary School-Homer City, Pa., with a time of 9 hours, 10 minutes, 11 seconds set on April 19, 2013.comments powered by Disqus
