For the fifth year in a row Mary Hughes third and forth grade students gave back to the community donating about 250 items to the Sullivan County Animal Shelter.
Instead of exchanging gifts to one another the students chose to give back to their community.
Starting before Thanksgiving students collected dog and cat food, cat litter, treats, toys, leashes, and cleaning supplies. Several students chose to use their allowance to purchase items for the animal shelter.
“It is heartwarming to see the students excited, motivated, and full of the giving spirit this time of year.” Said Jennifer Webb Mary Hughes forth grade teacher.
Sullivan County Animal Shelter brought Shelter Dog Shelly the shelter mascot to talk with the students about the importance of keeping animals during the winter warm, with fresh food and water, and encouraged the students to play with their animals to provide them with love and exercise.
