Santa signals to someone in the crowd that the next gift he tosses is meant for them as the Santa Train stops at Haysi, Va. Saturday morning.
ABOARD THE SANTA TRAIN — Despite a damp, chilly morning under cloudy skies, the crowds that turned out Saturday for Santa Train 2013 didn’t appear to be any less than normal sized all along the train’s 110-mile route.
This year Santa brought along singer Kree Harrison.
And nearly 20 tons of gifts, donated by individuals, groups and businesses from across the region — and in many cases, from across the nation.
Co-sponsored by CSX Transportation, the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce, Food City, and Dignity U Wear, the Santa Train began as a way for Kingsport’s merchants to say thanks to all the folks along the train’s route for shopping in the Model City.
This was the train’s 71st annual trek from Shelby, Ky., to downtown Kingsport.
It was Harrison’s second time on the Santa Train, first riding it in 2001 when she was 11 years old.
