President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers
Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police
Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police
Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost
their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of
others. National Police Week 2013 will be Sunday, May 12th
through Saturday, May 18th.
To honor National Peace Officers Memorial Day,
the Burgess-Mills F.O.P. Lodge #11 conducted both a
Candlelight Service on Monday, May 13, 2013 at the Kingsport
These services are dedicated to the many brave
men and women who have dutifully served this country in upholding the laws of
each state and this great nation and in so doing have lost their lives.
They made the ultimate sacrifice. They have given their lives to protect
and keep each citizen safe from harm’s way. May we never forget the
sacrifice that each has made.
