Nelson Qullen, certified police bike instructor and retired Kingsport police officer conducted a bicycle safety class at the school on Thursday,
The bike safety classes were held in preparation for next week's ride your bike to school day. During P.E. classes Roosevelt students were trained in the proper way to fit bike helmets and seats, along with traffic safety.
Roosevelt elementary students were trained in the proper way to fit bike helmets and bike seats and traffic safety during their P.E. classes.
The school has received nearly $14,000 for pedestrian and bike safety education this year through the Safe Routes program. In addition to training the grants provide 75 bike helmet and other bike safety equipment.
Roosevelt and Kennedy Elementary schools both received grants from the Safe Routes to School program. SRTS is a federally funded program focusing on the benefits of children walking and biking to school. Its programs aim to improve safety for children and the community and provide opportunities to increase physical activity.
