KINGSPORT – Under the direction of instructor Valeria Sinyavskaya, Kingsport Ballet will stage the classic crowd-pleaser, “The Sleeping Beauty,” next month.
When and where
Public performances will take place April 12-14 at Eastman's Toy F. Reid Employee Center auditorium. A performance for school groups and homeschooled groups will be held on April 11 at 10 a.m.
What to expect
“The Sleeping Beauty” is considered one of those classics that appeal to all ages, partly because of Peter Tchaikovsky's memorable score. The music contains some very recognizable segments many people first encountered as children watching beloved Disney movies.
The ballet is set at the end of the dark ages and the beginning of the Renaissance, which is symbolized in the story with Aurora and her kingdom's “awakening” after a 100-year sleep.
Who will perform?
The company will bring in principal dancers and soloists from Alabama Ballet and Columbia Classical Ballet to merge on stage with Kingsport Ballet Company members and dedicated students from the school.
Character roles will be performed by area dancers and actors. The cast, along with the seven professional guest artists, will dance some of the most memorable roles of ballet.
Tickets are $10 for college students and children 5 years and under, $15 for groups of 15 people or more, $16 for school-age students and seniors, and $20 for adults.
Tickets may be purchased online at www.kingsportballet.org or by calling Kingsport Ballet at (423) 378-3967. All seats are reserved.
“This ballet is a classic everyone should see,” Sinyavskaya said. “For those who love ballet, this one is usually a favorite, and for those who are new to it, this ballet is sure to become their favorite! Magic spells, heartbreak and love – in addition to some of the most beautiful ballet dancing in the history of ballet – take center stage in ‘The Sleeping Beauty.’”
