BRISTOL, Tenn. — YWCA Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia has teamed up with Buckle Up for Life and Niswonger Children's Hospital to offer free car seat safety checks. The safety checks are open to the public and will be held at the YWCA parking lot at 106 State Street, Bristol, Tenn., Tuesday, June 26. All are welcome to drop by anytime between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. All styles of infant carriers, convertible and booster car seats will be checked by certified child passenger safety technicians on a first-come, first-serve basis.
According to research by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, in the U.S., only one in four child car seats are properly installed. That stat is even higher for Hispanic and African American children. Many vehicle related injuries and deaths are avoidable with the use of proper restraints. Buckle Up for Life is working to save lives by reinforcing that safety is a driver's paramount concern and that buckling up is not an option. Buckle Up for Life is a community-based passenger safety education program that educates the entire family on critical safety behaviors and can assist with obtaining child car seats to families in need.
