Northeast State spring commencement ceremony set May 8

BLOUNTVILLE — Northeast State Community College celebrates a new class of graduates receiving degrees and certificates at the 2018 spring graduation ceremony happening May 8 at the East Tennessee State University/Moutain States Health Alliance Athletics Center on the campus of ETSU in Johnson City. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m.

The 2018 class of 1,463 graduates represents one of the largest graduating classes in the College’s history. The College will award a total of 1,798 associate degrees, technical certificates, and academic certificates.

Northeast State will award 22 academic certificates, 514 technical certificates, 449 associate of applied science degrees, 36 associate of arts degrees, 26 associate of science in teaching degrees, and 751 associate of science degrees. A total of 206 students will graduate cum laude (3.6 - 3.74 GPA), 108 will receive magna cum laude distinction (3.75 - 3.89 GPA), and 118 students will graduate summa cum laude (3.9 - 4.0 GPA).

Nick Pinchuk, chairman and chief executive officer of Snap-on Inc., will deliver the commencement address. Pinchuk was named president and chief operating officer in April 2007, when he was also appointed to Snap-on’s board of directors. He joined Snap-on in 2002 as senior vice president and president of Snap-on’s Worldwide Commercial and Industrial Group.

Pinchuk is a noted expert on workforce development and technical education and careers. Recognizing his role in the formation of the nation’s technical education agenda, the Career and Technical Education Foundation named Pinchuk National Business Leader of the Year in 2011. SkillsUSA named him Champion of the Year in 2012. Before Snap-on, Pinchuk was president, global refrigeration operations, a multi-billion dollar business unit of Carrier Corp., a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. He also served in Vietnam as an officer in the U.S. Army.

Pinchuk received his MBA from Harvard, and master and bachelor of science degrees in engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He currently serves on the boards of Columbus McKinnon Corp.; the National Association of Manufacturers; and the Manufacturer’s Alliance for Productivity and Innovation.
