Hawkins' United Way donates $5,000 to Neighborhood Service Center

ROGERSVILLE — Funds donated by United Way of Hawkins County will be distributed by the Hawkins County Neighborhood Service Center to aid eligible individuals and/or families struggling with water, natural gas and electric bills.

The Hawkins County Neighborhood Service Center is one of the nine service centers operated by the Upper East Tennessee Human Development Agency.

“Thank you to United Way (of Hawkins County) for partnering with us to help our community,” says Teresa Buttry, community service specialist for the Hawkins County Neighborhood Service Center. “This donation will help make a difference in the lives of many community members that are struggling with utility bills.”

To be able to receive this aid, an individual or a member of the household would have to be disabled, over the age of 60, or have children in the home under the age of 18. Recipients would also have to fall within the 150% poverty income guidelines.

Individuals with job loss at no fault of their own, have out have out of pocket medical expenses/auto repair that is greater than or equal to the amount of the bill in question, or exhausted unemployment benefits will also be considered.

The funds are not to be used for connection or deposit fees. The utility account must be active and in past due or disconnect status.

Upper East Tennessee Human Development Agency serves Tennessee’s first district which includes Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington counties.

Local neighborhood service centers offer specifically targeted services from emergency assistance to more long-term paths for self-sufficiency.
