Stapleton and Arrington
Cydnie Lynn Arrington and Brandon McKinley Stapleton were married June 21, 2014, at Pleasant View Baptist Church, Kingsport.
The bride is the daughter of Kristie Middleton of Big Stone Gap, Va., and Shannon Arrington of Kingsport. She is the granddaughter of Lois Arrington of Kingsport, the late Cecil Arrington, Nina and Billy Wells of Big Stone Gap, Bethel Brock of Gate City, Va., and the late Hubert Brock. She graduated from Gate City High School and attended Mountain Empire Community College. She is employed at Wellmont Medical Associates.
The bridegroom is the son of David McKinley and Anita Lynn Stapleton. He is the grandson of Mary Rose Stapleton of Kingsport, the late William McKinley Stapleton, Henrietta Roach of Clinchport, Va., and the late Robert Roach. He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He is employed with Solstas Lab Partners.
Smith and Schlather
Allison Nicole Schlather of Kingsport, Tenn., and Dieter James Smith of Kingsport, Tenn., were married on March 29, 2014 at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. The Rev. Will Lauderback officiated the 4 p.m. ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Jerry and Carol Schlather of Kingsport, Tenn. The bridegroom is the son of Brad and Shari Smith of Talbott, Tenn.
The bride was given in marriage by her parents and escorted to the altar by her father.
Laura Hickman, best friend of the bride, served as matron of honor, and Brad Smith, father of the groom, served as best man.
The intimate, family only service was followed by a dinner at Hale Springs Inn in Rogersville, Tenn. The couple celebrated later with extended family and friends.
The bride graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 2005 and East Tennessee State University in 2008 with a degree in construction management. Prior to the wedding, she worked at RA-LIN and Associates in Carrollton, Ga.
The groom graduated from Morristown-Hamblen High School West in 2002 and East Tennessee State University in 2006 with a degree in computer science. He currently works at Eastman Credit Union.
The couple honeymooned in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and currently resides in Kingsport, Tenn.
Carter and Ervin
Emily Lauren Carter and Zachary Hunter Ervin, both of Kingsport, Tenn., plan to be married at 4 p.m., July 12, 2014, at Rose Hill Wedding Cathedral.
The bride-elect is the daughter of Freddie and Susan Carter of Kingsport, and the granddaughter of the late Fred and Louella Carter and the late Mary Hammett Ollinger. Emily graduated from Sullivan South High School and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She will begin her career as an elementary school teacher with Shelby County Schools in July.
The bridegroom-to-be is the son of Rob and Wendy Ervin of Kingsport, and the grandson of Jerry and Peggy Ervin of Kingsport, and Sid and Kathy Osborne of Gate City, Va. Zach graduated from Sullivan South High School, where he was a member of the football team. He received a bachelor's degree from UT Knoxville and will pursue his doctorate degree in physical therapy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis this fall.
Whitman 90th birthday
Thomas Buford "Spider" Whitman will celebrate his 90th birthday on June 26, 2014.
He was born in Damascus, Va., in 1924 to Thomas L. and Carrie E. Whitman. Shortly after his birth, they moved to Kingsport, Tenn., where he attended city schools. While at John Sevier Middle School, Thomas met his future wife, Juanita Salley. They then attended Dobyns-Bennett High School.
Thomas was drafted into the Army on Jan. 31, 1943, during World War II, and he served in the Pacific as an amphibious engineer. While on leave from basic training in July 1943, Thomas and Juanita were married, and will celebrate their 71st anniversary on July 11, 2014. After completing his military service in the Pacific, he returned to Kingsport and resumed his work at Tennessee Eastman, from which he retired at the age of 62 after more than 30 years of service.
Thomas and Juanita have two children, Terry Thomas Whitman and wife Terri, and Sandra Jessee and husband David; one granddaughter, Tina Whitman; two great-grandchildren, Corbin and MacKenzie; three step grandchildren, Andrew Dean, April Griffin and husband Chad, and Justin Dougherty and wife Lindsey; and two step great-grandchildren, Alex and Nolan.
Thomas is a member of Island Road Evangelical Methodist Church, where he has served in various positions over the years. He is a loving and Godly husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, step grandfather, great-grandfather and step great-grandfather.
Parker 80th birthday
Norma Geraldine Poe Parker was born to Thomas Gale and Reta Pearl Poe on June 29, 1934. Her family feels very blessed to be able to celebrate with her on her 80th birthday.
She is the loving mother of Norma Anderson and husband Hugh; Freddy Freeman and wife Rita; and Tim Freeman and wife Debbie.
There will be a celebration held in her honor from 2 to 4 p.m., June 28, 2014, in the fellowship hall at Freedom Independent Missionary Baptist Church, 1536 Independence Ave., Mount Carmel, Tenn.
