Callie Mae Carter Darnell celebrated her 103rd birthday June 25, 2014, at Riverfront Seafood Restaurant along with her immediate family. Cake and gifts were shared later at home.
Callie Mae was born in Kentucky in 1911 to Victoria Fields Carter from Speer's Ferry and Cicero Carter. After her parents' deaths, she and her brother, Lincoln Carter, moved from Kentucky to Eidson, Tenn., to live with their paternal grandmother. At the age of 16, Callie Mae moved to Kingsport to begin work at Holliston Mills. Years later she worked at several industries, including the Kingsport Press and Holston Defense during the war. She worked for almost 20 years as a cook at Lynn Garden Grade School, from where she retired.
She was married to the late Craft Darnell for 54 years and had two children, Tommy Darnell and Betty Kay Darnell Kennedy. She has two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Callie Mae is a member of long standing at Lynn Garden Baptist Church. She is an amazing woman.
