Newland 90th birthday

Carl Mitchell Newland of Mount Carmel will celebrate his 90th birthday on Sept. 1, 2013.

He was born on Sept. 1, 1923 in Scott County, Va. He is the oldest of seven children born to E.S. and Julia Couch Newland.

Carl started work at Tennessee Eastman in 1941 then took a leave to join the military. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and tells about riding the Queen Mary to England. Upon returning from the war, he resumed his employment at Eastman and retired from there after 43 years.

He married Pauline Orton Newland in 1946, and they settled in Mount Carmel where they celebrated 63 years of marriage prior to her death in 2009. They were active members of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he still faithfully attends.

Carl is the father to four sons and their wives: Larry and wife, Patty, of Gray; twins, Don and wife, Rhonda, and Ron and wife, Brenda, all of Kingsport; and Randall and wife, Stephanie, of Alabama. He has 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family invites you to join them in celebrating Carl’s 90th birthday milestone Sept. 1, 2013, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., at Mama’s House Buffet restaurant’s back room for cake or cobbler and ice cream. The address is 2608 N. John B, Dennis Hwy., Kingsport.
