Former University of Tennessee football coach Phil Fulmer's vaunted record against Alabama apparently extends to turkeys.
On a wild turkey hunt in Alabama two weeks ago with former Tennessee head coach Bill Battle, Fulmer killed two gobblers with a single shot.
Fulmer said he thought he was drawing a bead on a single bird, only to discover two when he went to retrieve his trophy.
"I really don't think it was a set-up. I really don't think anyone was trying to make me feel good, especially because it was Alabama," quipped Fulmer during a press conference prior to Saturday's UT Orange and White game in Knoxville.
Fulmer, who indicated that he intends to coach again at some point in the future, said he has made use of his recent bonanza of free time to pursue a wide number of outdoor activities that his coaching duties previously precluded.
"I've already been quail hunting twice, turkey hunting once, duck hunting once and fishing twice. That's more than I'd ordinarily go in two years. So I've enjoyed the spring very much," Fulmer said.
Fulmer said he's never been a big deer hunter, so he has no plans for that this upcoming fall. However he has considered an invitation to go elk hunting and is mulling the prospect of a return visit to Alaska, where he landed a 29 1/2 inch rainbow last year.
Fulmer noted he really hadn't enjoyed much leisure time to speak of since becoming a football player at Tennessee.
"I'm just enjoying whatever comes along because I haven't had a chance to do it," Fulmer said. "I've always like to bird hunt. I've done that for a long time. But other than that, I really don't have any other favorites."
