WISE — The Wise County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday announced it will join nearly 10,000 other law enforcement agencies nationwide in support of a crackdown on impaired driving with a law enforcement campaign from Aug. 15 through Sept. 1.
A high profile 'Border To Border' occupant protection and DUI enforcement, to add particular public attention to the campaign known as Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, will be from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Virginia-Kentucky line on U.S. 23, the Wise County Sheriff's Office said.
Other law enforcement agencies participating in the 'Border To Border' crackdown will include the Virginia State Police, Wise County Commonwealth's Attorney office, Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Motor Carrier division, Letcher County, Ky. Sheriff's Office, Kentucky State Police, and police departments from Norton, Appalachia, Big Stone Gap, Pound, Wise and Jenkins, Ky.
Wise County Sheriff Ronnie Oakes said late summer revelers, particularly advancing toward Labor Day weekend, are always a concern for law enforcement.
"Since twice as many alcohol impaired accidents occur over the weekend, and four times as many occur at night, we will be especially vigilant during these high risk times when impaired drivers are most likely to be on our roads," Oakes said of the special two week vigilant period.
Officers will also focus on occupant protection to make sure citizens are buckled up.
"We want everyone to have a safe and happy Labor Day," Oakes said.comments powered by Disqus
