TIMOTHY RAY HATFIELD
CHURCH HILL — Church Hill police charged a Hawkins County man with drug possession and DUI second offense last week while investigating a vehicular collision that occurred in front of the local Pal's restaurant.
On Friday July 11, shortly after 11:30 a.m., Church Hill Police Department Officer Derek Shaffer responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 11-W at Pal's restaurant .
The victim reportedly told Shaffer she was attempting to make a right hand turn off of the highway when a vehicle collided with the rear of her vehicle.
The driver of the rear vehicle, Timothy Ray Hatfield, 57, 1204 Grassy Creek Road, Rogersville, reportedly told Shaffer he did not notice the vehicle in front of him slowing down and attempting to turn.
"While speaking with Mr. Hatfield I observed his pupils to be abnormally constricted," Shaffer wrote in his report. "Mr. Hatfield stated he takes prescription medication in the morning. Mr. Hatfield was administered a series of field sobriety tests in which he performed poorly by failing all three tests administered."
Shaffer added that Hatfield admitted to taking two hydrocodone pills earlier in the morning, and Hatfield appeared confused as to what time of day it was and how the accident occurred.
During a search of Hatfield's vehicle, an orange oblong pill believed to be hydrocodone was allegedly recovered from under the driver's seat.
Shaffer was then arrested and charged with DUI second offense and simple possession of Schedule III narcotics.
He was arraigned Monday in Hawkins County Sessions Court, and a trial date of Jan. 7, 2015, was scheduled.comments powered by Disqus
