ELIZABETHTON — The Kingsport Mets struck first, but the Elizabethton came through with enough offense to double up the K-Mets at Joe O'Brien Fieldon Thursday night.
Pedro Perez's two-run homer in the top of the first inning was all the offense Kingsport could muster in a 4-2 loss to the Twins. Elizabethton answered with a single run in each of the first three innings and added one more insurance run in the sixth to secure the Appalachian League victory.
Yoan Gonzalez (1-3) took the loss for Kingsport, lasting just four innings. Gonzalez allowed six hits, walked a pair of batters and gave up three runs, two of them earned.
After the K-Mets (9-12) jumped ahead, Elizabethton (14-7) used a steady approach to get the lead back. Tyler Kuresa drove in a run on a groundout in the first, Brian Navarreto hit a solo homer in the second to tie the game and Brian Navarreto came up with an RBI double to put the Twins ahead for good.
Brett Doe scored on a fielding error by the K-Mets in the bottom of the sixth to give Elizabethton some breathing room, but the bullpen didn't need it. Kuo Hua Lo and Dereck Rodriguez combined to throw four shutout innings of relief to nail down the win. Lo struck out five batters in two innings while Rodriguez threw two innings to record his first save of the season.
Matt Batts (1-0) earned the win for the Twins, scattering four hits across five innings after recovering nicely from Perez's homer.
Kingsport will try to salvage a win when the two teams wrap up their three-game series Friday night in Elizabethton. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 o'clock.comments powered by Disqus
