KINGSPORT — City school board members Andy King and Betsy Cooper resigned on Thursday, leaving the Board of Mayor and Aldermen to appoint two to take their places.
According to a news release from Kingpsort City Schools, King is leaving to for a Marriott promotion to take a general manager's position at a facility in New Orleans. He is general manager of the MeadowView Marriott Conference, Resort & Convention Center in Kingsport.
KCS Chief Information Officer Andy True said Cooper is resigning so the system can consider hiring her daughter into a teaching position.
The KCS policy is that no sitting school board member can have a family member hired by the school system, True and a KCS news release said.
King first was appointed by the BMA in 2012 when BOE member Cheryl Harvey resigned so her husband could be hired as principal of Sevier Middle School. King then was elected to a four-year BOE term running from 2013 to 2017.
Cooper was elected to the board in 2011 to a term ending in 2015.
Whoever the BMA appoints to either position will serve until the 2015 city election. At that time, the Cooper seat would be filled by election to a full four-year term, while the King seat race winner would serve two years, until 2017.
