KPD announces 26 indictments in drug cases

A lengthy investigation into the illegal sale of prescription drugs in Kingsport has netted 26 indictments and numerous arrests, including suspects who allegedly sold narcotics from their hospital bed and while on the clock at a fast food restaurant.

According to a press release from the Kingsport Police Department, the investigation was launched in the fall of last year. KPD Vice and Narcotics Detective Nathan Elliott says the efforts included cooperation with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Scott County Sheriff's Office.

Some of the individuals indicted in Sullivan County through the KPD cases were also recently indicted in Scott County then arrested in March's "Shamrock Shakedown" drug roundup.

KPD Public Information Officer Tom Patton reports that as Kingsport investigators worked their narcotics cases, they encountered suspects involved in other offenses.

Norma Wilson, 59, of 1627 Vance St., Kingsport, is charged with two counts of sale or delivery of narcotics with 1,000 feet of school, along with food stamp fraud. She reportedly sold her state benefit card.

One undercover buy occurred in a hospital room, according to investigators, when an admitted patient sold his prescribed painkiller. The suspect, Michael McBride, 36, of 1643 Spruce St., Kingsport, is also charged with possession and sale of a firearm by a convicted felon, as he allegedly traded a stolen gun for drugs in another incident. He has yet to be apprehended following his indictment.

An investigation is ongoing, with additional charges anticipated by police.

The KPD is seeking the public's assistance in locating individuals who were indicted but have yet to be arrested. Anyone with information is asked to call the vice and narcotics unit at (423) 229-9434.
