KINGSPORT — For the Greater Kingsport Family YMCA, it's all about the people.
A lot of people.
Since the YMCA opened its new facility in May 2013, membership has increased from 5,076 members to 16,849. That's a 232 percent increase. And in the six months prior to the facility opening, the YMCA added 1,200 members.
Again, that's a lot of people.
"It's beyond what we projected," said Abigail Weaver, marketing and communications director for the YMCA. "We're way beyond what even we thought we would be eventually."
The YMCA normally tracks memberships in terms of "units," either an individual or a household. Initially, the YMCA had hoped to reach 3,800 membership units by the end of 2014.
"We hit that easily last year," Weaver said, noting that by the end of April the Y stood at nearly 4,300 membership units.
During its first year of operations (May 2013 to May 2014) the YMCA has seen 424,816 visits from members, 107,627 participants in group exercise programs, 23,795 children's visits to the Child Watch program and 17,164 youth visits to the Youth Fitness area.
