Carpet, vinyl, laminate, tile and hardwood. Winegar & Sons Floorcovering has it all, in every shade, style and species (hardwood) a discerning homeowner could want.
Winegar & Sons Floorcovering - a 31-year-old, family-owned business owned and run by founder Wayne Winegar and his two sons Curtis and Alan Winegar - is a full service business, offering customers personalized assistance from the store to their homes.
Winegar & Sons pride themselves on their high level of service and knowledge of new flooring products in the latest trends of hard surfaces, and more specifically hardwood.
"When we first started out, we sold only carpet and vinyl," Curtis Winegar said. "Lately, a third of our business is hardwood... within the last seven years we've started really getting into it."
Curtis said Winegar & Sons deals only with prefinished hardwood of which there are two kinds: engineered and solid.
The kind of hardwood best suited for a home depends on the specific owner's need for it as well as its placement within the house. The first question Curtis said he asks customers is "where are you putting it? Above grade or below grade (underground/basement)?"
Engineered hardwood is more stable than solid hardwood and is often better for homes in this area because it's more sustainable to moisture, Curtis explained.
"Solid hardwood can expand and contract which leads to cupping. Engineered hardwood, because of cross laminating, will not move... there are only certain places you can put solid in a house. You can put engineered everywhere."
Curtis said they are often asked if both engineered and solid prefinished hardwood flooring can be sanded and refinished. The answer is yes.
"Prefinished floors can be sanded and re-finished, but with up to seven coats of baked-on urethane, it's rarely necessary," he said.
After a customer chooses between engineered or solid hardwood, they must then decide between the many different species of hardwood flooring offered by Winegar & Sons.
"Our most popular type of hardwood flooring is 3 inch wide red oak with a high gloss finish," Curtis said.
Whether opting for a cleaner or "select" hardwood with a perfect finish for more money or a second or "cabin" grade hardwood for less, "you can do hardwood once for what it would cost to do carpet twice in your house," Curtis said.
With a hardwood picked out at the store, customers return home where they are met by the skilled professionals from Winegar & Sons. Curtis said we measure the necessary room(s), check the condition of the subfloor - adding that if need be, they can replace a subfloor to install the hardwood - and walk through the installation with the customer, giving them a time frame for the job and working out a convenient start date for them.
"We try to make it as painless as possible," Curtis said with a smile. "All you've got to do is just live on [the floor] when we get done."
