KINGSPORT — The "road work ahead" and "uneven lanes" signs should be up along Center Street and Lynn Garden Drive, all in preparation for the repaving work scheduled to begin tonight.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation is launching a major resurfacing project along Center, Lynn Garden and Stone Drive this summer. The $4.2 million project calls for nearly eight miles of roads getting a fresh layer of asphalt, new bicycle lanes and a lane adjustment for a good portion of Center Street.
The plan is for resurfacing work to start on Center Street at Fort Henry Drive, then move to Lynn Garden and finish up with Stone Drive. The contract calls for the work to be completed by Aug. 31.
Actual road work (milling and paving) will begin Sunday night with paving operations performed Sunday through Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Other work, such as sidewalk ramp construction, will be allowed during the day.
Assistant Public Works Director Michael Thompson said W&L Construction and Paving began putting up the more than 100 signs along Center and Lynn Garden — and their side streets — all in preparation for Sunday's construction start.
Signs will eventually go up along Stone Drive and its side streets as W&L gets closer to starting that final phase of the project.
