Updated: Lebanon woman killed in car wreck in Scott County

NICKELSVILLE — A Southwest Virginia woman was killed Friday morning in a single-vehicle accident in Scott County.

Virginia State Police identified the victim as Rachel Dawn Boger, 31, of Lebanon.

Boger was the vehicle's only occupant.

The wreck reportedly occurred at 5:15 a.m. on Route 71 across from Nickelsville Elementary School near the entrance to Keith Memorial Park.

Boger was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

State police said Boger was driving southbound on Route 71 in a 2005 Ford F250 when the truck ran off the left-hand side of the road.

The vehicle reportedly struck an embankment before it became airborne and hit a second embankment. The truck then overturned from the impact before landing on its top.

Authorities said it was not immediately clear what caused Boger's truck to leave the roadway. Heavy fog was reported in the area at the time of the crash.

A witness to the accident attempted to assist Boger immediately after it took place, state police said.

Rescue workers reportedly had to use the Jaws of Life to open to door to Boger's vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said speed was believed to be a factor in the crash, which occurred on a section of Route 71 that had a posted speed limit of 25 mph.

State police also said they believe Boger would had survived the crash had she been wearing a seat belt.

Nickelsville Fire and Rescue and the Scott County Sheriff's Office assisted VSP at the scene.
