In celebration of Barter Theatre's summer-long production of "The Wizard of Oz," Mallory Fine Art in Abingdon, Va., is going "Over the Rainbow" with an exhibit of new "Oz"-themed works, on display June 5 through Aug. 9. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., June 4.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Saturday. Admission is free.
Inspired by Barter's musical, the exhibit features new original interpretive works of art by Mallory Fine Artists Christine Berg, Carole Blevins, Leila Cartier, Quinn Hawkesworth, Suzanne Stryk, Kristi Taylor and Nadya Warthen-Gibson.
"These beautiful works are interpretive, stemming from the inspiration of what 'Over the Rainbow' looks like to the artists involved," said gallery owner Polly Mallory.
Along with this collection of original works in various genres and mediums, the gallery will feature a collection of "Wizard of Oz"-themed fine art images by photographer Jeffrey Stoner. The images were taken at the Land of Oz theme park in western North Carolina, where Stoner was given special permission to photograph.
"This collection of six images are perfect souvenirs for anyone who has seen the Barter production and would like to take home a visual memory of not just the theatre experience, but also a local purchase of art from our own special town of Abingdon," Mallory said.
The gallery is among a number of businesses in Abingdon participating as a Yellow Brick Road Partner during the town-wide celebration.
Mallory Fine Art is located at 112 E. Main St. in Abingdon.
