"Again Jesus said, 'Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.' And with that he breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.' " — John 20:21-22 (NIV)
Each day, many of us head out into the world. Some days we eagerly anticipate the work we're about to accomplish or the activities we're going to enjoy. Other days (Mondays, come to mind), we aren't in a hurry to accomplish much of anything. Certainly there is an ebb and flow to our energy levels and our desire to be engaged in the world. When Jesus appeared to his disciples after he rose from the dead, according to the Gospel of John, Jesus sent those disciples out into the world in the same way his Father had sent him. That can be a daunting prospect — to go into the world and love it, heal it, console it and forgive it the same way Jesus did. But Jesus also gave his disciples the Holy Spirit, the same Holy Spirit that comes to us to give us the energy to be engaged in the world in Jesus' name. Our work, therefore, is God's work, and all we begin will be accomplished in God's good time and to God's glory.
Prayer: Gracious God, send Your Spirit among us to give us grace and power to accomplish all that You will for this world. Amen.
