Ferguson takes Volunteer Speedway win

Chris Ferguson

BULLS GAP — North Carolina's Chris Ferguson won the Super Late Model feature Saturday night at Volunteer Speedway after besting the track's weekly drivers.

Ferguson, not a regular on the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series that was making a stop at the Gap, took the pole, led the entire 40 laps and pocketed $4,000 for his first win at the track.

Ferguson has been on a roll, winning the $10,000 USA 100 last Saturday at Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, Va. "It's been awesome," Ferguson said. "We finally figured out what this car needed, and everything has went our way."

Brad Neat took second, followed across the line by Kennie Compton Jr., Zack Mitchell and Jason Welshan.

In the $2,000-to-win 40-lap Steel Head Late Model feature, Cory Hedgecock made a winning pass with three laps to go to beat out Trevor Sise, Greg Estes, Anthony Whie and John Tweed.

The race was marred by a seven-car pileup on lap 26 that brought out a red flag.

Other winners on Saturday included Warren McMahan, who cruised to his first win in Crate Late Models over track champion Tim Byrd, and Gary Blanken, who lost his top qualifying spot to Charles Bates at the start but made a winning pass around the 10-lap mark to claim the victory.
